Jèrriais literature

Bouônjour, ch'est

Jèrriais is not just a social language but, as Swinburne wrote, a true literary language. The first printed literature appeared soon after the introduction of the printing press to Jersey, and since then a variety of prose, poetry and drama has reflected and recorded the lives of Jersey people in our native Island and across the world.

  • Writers have looked back to Wace as the founder of Jèrriais literature

  • Short stories, rather than novels, have been the genre of choice for prose writers

  • The first anthology of Jèrriais poetry was published in 1865

  • There have been three Jersey winners of the Prix littéraire du Cotentin, a major Normandy literary prize

  • The vernacular writers of Jersey and Guernsey inspired the 19th century Norman literary renaissance

  • Jèrriais writers have written about spaceships and sea voyages, Jersey cows and American cowboys, politics and potatoes, love, life and liberation...
