According to his obituary in the Times (7 January 2011), Sir Iain Noble, founder of the Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye, believed that having a separate language was “a great asset to the development of any community.” He thought that Gaelic was as important to be heard in the boardroom as at the peat-fire and insisted on having Gaelic-speaking employees. The cultural activities which he encouraged are estimated to bring over £1 million per year to the community on the Isle of Skye.
