The Advocate (d’la Louisianne) rapporte:

Parlez-vous Française en Baton Rouge?

“Laissez les bons temps rouler.”

It’s a phrase often synonymous with Louisiana culture, a tribute to the region’s unique history and “let the good times roll” way of life that’s recognizable by most English speakers in the state.

Baton Rouge, despite its francophone name, isn’t viewed as a destination for French speakers.

But, Herrick said the region does have a connection to a French past and can have a bright economic future by embracing the language through tourism and local businesses.

The recent popularity of microbreweries with French influences, such as Bayou Teche Brewing in Arnaudville, and the recent reality television obsession with Louisiana peculiarities serves as signs that residents are recognizing a need to draw a connection to a rich and unique French past.

“It’s amazing how many people come over here from France and want to hear French in Louisiana,” Richards said. “We would love to be able to come up with things that are economic development related or ways for people to find jobs with French.”
